Same Girl…Natural Hair: Morenike

And the beat goes on! Day by day another young lady is deciding to take the big step…and do the BIG chop! I can honestly say that this movement intrigues me. To watch YouTube for hours and hear everyone share their stories, seems so freeing and liberating. Although I have not BC’d, I am a member of team natural. I have not permed my entire head in over a year, although in November of 2010 for my birthday I decided to perm my edges, and guess what happened? They broke completely OFF! I mean down to the nitty gritty! They are now in the process of growing back and I have now learned my lesson (once again), and will NEVER put the “creamy crack” back in my hair again. But enough about me. We’ve found another Glam-Aholic to share her natural hair journey with us!

In the words of Morenike…

I big chopped for a bunch of reasons. 1. I always wanted to my hair short but was too scared to cut it. 2. My hair was severely heat damaged and kept breaking off. 3. I wanted a change, was going through a lot and decided to let go of some energy by cutting my hair. I’ve always been natural. I never got a relaxer but mostly wore my hair straight. I got a sew in for a trip to Miami and further damaged my hair by applying to much heat to the section that was left out trying to blend the hair (big mistake). Last year around July I decided to stop straightening my hair so much, explore more natural styles and get my hair back healthy. When I was younger was hair was WAY longer and the breakage was a sign that it was screaming for a break. It also didn’t make since to me to keep putting heat in it when at the time I was working out everyday and sweating it out. I started watching natural hair videos on youtube and saw all the beautiful women wearing there hair natural and remembered how much I loved my hair as a child before I started pressing, blow drying and flat ironing it all the time.

It’s healthier. Promotes healthier life style (exercise, eating and etc..). It promotes self-love. Many black women are not comfortable with their natural hair and believe that they “need” relaxers. There’s more versatility in the styles you can achieve being natural. It’s cost effective vs. going to the shop every week. Most naturals do their own hair. You can braid it, twist it, braid outs, twist outs, flexi-rod sets, roller sets, sew-ins (if taken care of properly) or wigs. There are so many options.

Right now I LOVE 2-strand twists, twist out and coil sets. I’m still in the TWA stage (teeny weeny afro) so my styles are limited but my hair is growing quickly. To maintain my hair I use water, shea butter, shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie, eco styler gel and any oil you can think of (olive, coconut, castor, jojoba…etc…)

Be patient with your hair (this is advice I’m following myself as far as growth goals). Get to know your hair. Embrace YOUR hair and don’t expect it to look like anyone elses. And don’t be afraid to be “different”. Also my fav obsession since cutting my hair has been earrings and make-up! When I see a huge pair of beautiful earrings I must have them! I’ve always been a make-up junkie but since my BC it’s gotten worse. lol! You can’t go wrong w/ a BEAT face and bomb earrings!

TRY it! Some people are stuck on one standard of beauty when the beautiful thing about our hair is that we can wear it SO MANY different ways! So I would say give it a try. You can always go back to what you were doing before but I guarantee if you really give it a try you won’t regret it. You can wear your hair natural and still be FLY!

  1. Yes, her hair is beautiful. I too am on team natural, been off the creamy crack since Nov 2009, almost 3 years strong…didn’t do the BC either but cut most of the perm off back in March 2010 to a mid –neck length style and it’s been healthier ever since and growing nice and healthy! The creamy crack does seem tempting around July/ August months…but I’ve been strong..lol!

  2. #TEAMNATURALHAIR! Morenike, I love your hair, and the growth rate is unbelievable! I remember my hair being like this one year ago, and it seemed like it took FOREVER to grow back, but it was worth the it! I love the diversity in being natural and being able maintaining a healthy head of hair!

  3. Thx ladies!!! 😉

  4. love being on #teamnatural!!! I also never did a BC because I am scissor happy so I was trimming if off so much i really didnt need to. It was wonderful to experience the change especially living in TX. Half of the year using a flat iron for me was a losing battle so from April/May until October I keep my hair in two strand twist. It also helps to define my curl in October when I usually wear it in a wet and go style. I must agree with Morenike face and earrings will set any natural style and any natural style will set any face and earrings.

  5. Whoop Whoop! Team Natural! I love my natural hair. I too did not big chop! I just let the creamy crack grow completely out! I have been natural now for about 5 and a half years! However, I do still wear my hair straight. I put heat in my hair once every two weeks (for the most part). I bought $40 Remington flat irons with the pink pearlized plates. It gets my hair very straight and blocks out moisture! I love them! Everyone thinks I still get a relaxer because the flat irons are awesome…until I start sweating. I said they block out moisture…not liquid! LOL My hair sprials when its wet so it becomes clear that there is no relaxer once I sweat or get it washed…and because my hair is passed my shoulders, I’m able to hide the “curlies” at the root under everything else. I love it! I recommend Team Natural to everyone! You don’t have to get BC’d in order to do it…and you don’t have to wear the “natural look”. I think thats what scare most people. The growth rate is stupid if you keep your ends clipped on a regular basis. Not to mention, my hair could pull an ox!

  6. I LOVE YOUR HAIR!…I have been natural for about 15 yrs & I’ve decided to

cut my hair… “really cut it” 🙂 and I want the exact length as yours!… Thanks

    for the inspiration!!… 🙂

Lol.. But I’m still not a 100 percent sure about the natural hair thing.. But it looks really pretty on a lot of women

  8. I did the “big chop” or freedom cut as my stylist says and I LOVE IT!!!!

  9. @Morenike, Your hair is absolutely beautiful! I’ve been on team natural for about a year now. I’ve gradually cut the relaxer out of my hair but still have a bit more to go. I’m moving on to the Big Chop next. I love my natural hair and just ready to let the transition phase go.
